ISLAMABAD: An Indian held on charges of spying at the Central prison in Lahore has died of tuberculosis, police said on Tuesday.

Abdul Aziz, 50, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, died on Monday, Sub-Inspector Ashiq said.

"Aziz was arrested a few years back while trying to cross the border without travel documents," Ashiq has been quoted as saying by the Daily Times.

The prisoner had been admitted at the jail's hospital for the past four months.

The body has been sent for an autopsy, he said, adding "police will inform the Indian High Commission after the autopsy and then decide whether to bury the deceased here or send his body to India for burial".

Indian High Commission officials  said they have not received any communication in this regard.

The High Commission will have to verify his identity before taking further action, an Indian official said.
