MUMBAI: Mobile service provider Hutchison Essar is expanding its reach in the west and east. While it is adding 50 towers at a cost of Rs 25 crore every month in the Mumbai circle, it will be investing Rs 500 crore in Kolkata and West Bengal circles this year.

In the south, it is going deeper, with the groundwork already in progress to enter Andaman and Nicobar Islands by October.

“We are the leaders in Mumbai circle and we are adding 50 towers every month for better penetration and connectivity,” said Harit Nagpal, operations director, Hutchison Essar.

As part of its focus on value added services, it has launched a new service called Hutch Tuesday, which offers one-for-one deals (buy one and get one free) on Tuesdays, informed Naveen Chopra, chief marketing officer, Hutchison Essar. It has tied up with 370 outlets across Mumbai to offer its customers value added deals through ‘Hutch Tuesday’, which is broadly categorised into movies, entertainment, dining and shopping. A customer can either message ‘TUESDAY’ to 123 or call 123500 and say ‘Tuesday’, select a category and download an ‘m-coupon’ from PlanetHutch. The 8 digit ‘m-coupon’ number has to be produced at the outlet to avail the benefits.

Hutch has also introduced the concept of automated kiosks where customers can view and pay their bills, buy recharge coupons and activate roaming services. The company plans to have 100 such kiosks, 50 each in Kolkata and Bengal as such kiosks have already been set up at metro stations in Delhi.

According to the Cellular Operators Association of India, Hutch has more than 15.3 million subscribers after the BPL Mobile Cellular Ltd acquisition.

On the BPL merger, Nagpal said, “We have already merged other BPL circles with Hutch except Maharashtra, which will be over in few months time.” The company plans to raise a whopping Rs 5,000 crore through an initial public offer.
