NEW DELHI: Nidhi and Simpy are students at Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC). Both are angry with Arjun Singh. Surprising, since both of them are OBCs and reservations would favour them.

"We feel insulted to be looked down upon as OBCs. We got through LHMC on our own merit and in all these years nobody thought of us differently. Suddenly, this reservation issue has come up and people have started treating us differently. We are actually being under-estimated, even though we got through the general quota," Nidhi said.

On Wednesday, a 500-plus student's gathering shouted slogans against OBC reservations at Raj Ghat in Delhi. It was dominated by the 'white coats' who said reservations in medicines is a crime. Surprisingly, there were banners that read" 'We are OBC's and we shun reservations'.

"How can you decide on the degree of competence on the basis of caste," asked Savleen, another LHMC graduate.

"When we apply for post-graduation we are already doctors. For the past five years, we have all studied the same syllabi, so why do they need reservations in post-graduate and super specialised courses. How long will we spoon-feed the reserved categories and teach them to walk on crutches?" asked Anirudh.

Most students present at the site said that all that the government was doing was to increase brain drain. "They are forcing us to look outside the country for job options if they are going to reduce seats by 50 per cent," said Jyotsana from IP College.

The protest march was organised by United Students and Youth for Equality. There were kids, who have just passed out of school.

Aditya Kaul, who has taken his Class XII board examination, summed it up: "All we
are asking from the government is a secular education system. A system that will not division among us."
