JODHPUR: A stony silence prevails in ‘dedh number’ (one-and-a-half) barrack in Jodhpur’s Central Jail. Till Thursday, when Salman Khan was imprisoned here, the barrack was buzzing with activity.
If Khan’s cell mate for 71 hours, Nambardar Mahesh, is to be believed, Khan did not kill the chinkara and is innocent.
Convicted for murder, Mahesh, who hails from Shahdara locality of Delhi, has been an inmate of the prison for 10 years.
Talking to DNA on Friday, he said that contrary to Khan’s screen image of a spoilt brat, the actor is polite and humble. According to Mahesh, Khan told him that an individual from Mumbai along with some locals killed the animal, and he was wrongly implicated.
Khan used to hum Hindi film songs apart from doing physical exercises for most part of the day, Mahesh recalled. “He was under intense pressure until he got the news that his bail application had been accepted by the court. But, he was still worried about the two pending cases in Jodhpur courts,” he said.

Katrina Kaif turned up in Jodhpur, Mahesh broached the topic of the actor’s marriage. Khan said he was in no hurry.
As a parting gift to Mahesh, Salman pledged to pay the fine levied by the court. Mahesh, who has one-and-a-half years of the sentence pending, would have to serve two more years if he does not pay the fine of Rs47,500.
But Mahesh isn’t worried about doing time in jail. His only wish is that the courts do justice to Khan.
In Mumbai, Khan’s father Salim Khan said his family will definitely fulfil the promise made to Mahesh. “We are already in the process of seeking legal opinion in Mahesh’s case,” he said. —With Baljeet Parmar in Mumbai
