AHMEDABAD: A day after the mass grave was excavated in Lunavada in central Gujarat, Ameenaben Habib Rasool, one of the victims and eye witnesses of the Pandarwada massacre that saw 21 dead in the wake of the post-Godhra violence in February 2002, has moved a special petition in the Gujarat High Court seeking CBI investigation in the matter. The co-petitioner is Teesta Setalwad, secretary of Citizens for Justice and Peace.

The special petition has been admitted in the High Court. It is scheduled to be heard on December 29.

Meanwhile in Lunavada, the police prepared a ‘panchnama’ of the incident and a CBI team has already arrived at the spot to take charge. “As soon as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) saw the developments on news channels, they took suo motu action and asked CBI to take over the investigations,” Teesta said addressing the media here on Wednesday.

In addition to the CBI investigation, the petitioners have also demanded that the remains unearthed by relatives of the deceased on December 27 be sent for DNA test to Forensic Science Laboratory in Hyderabad, where they could not be tampered with.

Teesta Setalwad said that this was the fifth attempt by the relatives of the deceased to find the dead bodies. “When they discovered the bodies on the river bed, the authorities were immediately informed.” she said.

CBI has more task

On Wednesday,  a three member CBI team from Mumbai, headed by Additional SP,  A N Taihar and sub inspectors Tavde and Pawar, visited the mass grave excavated on Tuesday at Lunavada.

While they did not entertain any queries from the media, sources indicated that they could be also investigating the case of two persons who went missing in the Bilkis Banu case.
