Your street food will be more hygienic as PMC warns hawkers

Pune: City hawkers and street vendors have got a warning from the PMC that the corporation is getting ready for the monsoon and aims to protect citizens from seasonal diseases like typhoid, diarrhoea and malaria. It is geared up to take action against vendors, who will not follow the guidelines given in this season.

In the monthly meeting organised by the National Society for Clean Cities, Pune (NSCC); asst municipal commissioner Madhav Jagtap pressed on a few guidelines needed to be followed by food vendors and other hawkers across the city and assured strict action if not followed.

Jagtap said, "For a healthier and cleaner monsoon ahead, hawkers in the city need to follow these guidelines so that we could control the outbreak of many common seasonal diseases that are caused by unhygienic conditions. For that the PMC is keen on doing surveillance of the hawkers if they are maintaining hygienic conditions in the city. We are planning to take strict measures if the guidelines are not followed by charging them with fines and declining their licence."

He declared these guidelines in the monthly meeting organised by the NSCC. The guidelines will soon be put up on the PMC website for public access. The meeting was held to discuss the PMC's take on the National Policy on Urban Street Vendors, which is also known as the Pune Pattern. As per the Supreme Court guidelines, and to facilitate the implementation of this policy, the PMC has appointed a 30-member Town Vending Committee (TVC) of which 40% represent various government departments, including the traffic police , 40%, represent various Street Vendor's organization and 20% represent various non-governmental and residential forums.

In the meeting, Sanjay Shanke, general secretory, Janeev Hawkers Union said, "There are more than 18 thousand hawkers around the city. They put up their stall from seven in the morning to 10 in the night. During these hours, we get numerous customers and in the course of serving food and water to them, the area gets dirty and that directly concerns the health of the citizens. We being the hawkers; representative organization are well aware of that. Hence, we have asked all food stall holders and vendors across the city to cooperate and follow these guidelines."

Guidelines given to the hawkers-

1. No vendors other than food stall holders are allowed to prepare the food on the spot.

2. They need to bring the food in ready conditions but in clean vessels with leads on them.

3. Only fruit juices can be made on the spot and hawkers need to attain separate license for that. Same applies while cutting fruits street-side.

4. A waste picking van will be sent two times- in the morning and in evening to pick the waste material from the hawkers. They cannot leave the waste on spot and need to wait for the vans to dump that.

5. After the permitted timeline which is 10pm; hawkers are supposed to clean the whole spot without keeping any leftovers behind.

If the rules are not followed by hawkers they are entitled for fine scaling from Rs. 1000, Rs. 2000 to Rs. 5000 and their license will be removed on further violations.
