Atithi Devo Bhava is one sentiment that surely the University of Pune (UoP) top brass is yet to learn.

In a shocking incident, an internal auditor who was called in for conducting an audit of accounts section at the International Studies Centre of the varsity was in for a rude shock when he found a worm in the cutlet served to him for refreshment. When he pointed it out, the officials pulled up the varsity’s canteen men as the cutlet was brought from there.

The students’ body said this was a proof of their allegations of unhygienic food served at various canteens on the varsity campus. While speaking to dna, SV Sorate, an official from the accounts department of the International Studies said, “Since our internal audit is going on, some auditors have come from the accounts section of the university to check the records and in the afternoon, we ordered some veg cutlets from the Adarsh Canteen.”

She said that one of the auditors found a worm inside the cutlet and showed it to the staff. “We then immediately called up the canteen operator and showed him the cutlet and the worm and sought an explanation,” she said.

Manoj Nalawade, the proprietor of the Adarsh Canteen accepted the mistake and apologised to the officials. “I accept the mistake and will ensure that from next time, they would take extra precaution while preparing food items,” he said. Some members from the student organisation said that they have been complaining about the unhygienic food items in the canteens  and they had also complained to the registrar of UoP, Narendra Kadu, about the low quality food served to the students.
