When super-cool cops nab a cool trickster

Motwani, who slyly used to steal items from showrooms, held after a well-worked operation

Making use of the cellphone application, the Airport police have arrested a 49-year-old person who was wanted in six cheating cases registered in different parts of the state.

The police claimed that they have been investigating the case for the past one-and-half months and thereafter managed to nab Ramesh Thataram Motwani, who runs a garment shop in Baroda in Gujarat.

Blessed with good communication skills, Motwani would speak fluently in English, Hindi and Marathi. Interrogations have revealed that he used to target big showrooms.

Speaking to dna, senior police inspector Dilip Nakudkar of Airport police station, said, “Before striking at the showroom, Motwani used to book a room in a nearby hotel. Thereafter, he used to visit the showroom and conduct a recce. After completing his home work, he managed to procure the visiting card of the showroom.

He used to then hire an auto-rickshaw for travelling. While travelling, he would ask the driver for his cellphone stating that his cellphone battery is dead. Thereafter, he used to steal the SIM card and return the cellphone to the driver.”

He added, “Motwani used to then call the showroom’s landline number, place order for a particular gadget and request them to come to his hotel. Once the salesman would come with the gadget, Motwani used to receive it and request the salesman to collect money from his wife who he would say is in the room. Later, he used to disappear from the scene.”

Similarly, Motwani had cheated a Sony showroom’s salesman on August 21 and fled with a camera worth Rs74,000. Thereafter, the showroom’s manager had lodged a complaint against Motwani.
While investigating the case, initially the police neither had the CCTV footage nor his cellphone number. Later, the police came to know that the landline number of the Sony showroom had called ID system. Following which, the investigators collected the details of the calls and zeroed downed his cellphone number.

“After zeroing down, we came to know that this person used the number for outgoing purpose. We called on all those numbers and got to know that they are numbers of various showrooms. We collected the details from the showrooms and managed to procure the CCTV footage from one of them,” Nakudkar added.

Meanwhile, the investigators dug out his cellphone number’s location which they found in Manzalpur area, a place close to Baroda. Following which, a team led by police sub inspector Haribhau Marlad and five policemen were sent to Manzalpur.
When the police team reached Manzalpur, Motwani had started using another cellphone number. “But, I immediately sent a photograph of Motwani through a cellphone application. As a result, our policemen managed to nab him from his house,” Nakudkar said.
