Two alert youths chased and saved a 5-year-old boy from the clutches of two bike-borne kidnappers who had picked the child while he was walking home after alighting from school bus.

The incident took place in Keshavnagar area on Monday afternoon.

The brave duo Azad Gulam Chowdhary and his friend Tushar Jadhav were waiting near KRB Company for some work when they spotted the kidnappers and foiled their bid.

The kidnappers waiting on their bike managed to picked the child just outside his house but the duo chased down the kidnappers’ bike and nabbed them.

The Mundhwa police have arrested the two persons identified as Aditya Shyamvaibhav Chaturvedi (20) and Ashish Lalchand Shukla (19).

Mundhwa police station incharge and senior inspector Vishwanth Ghanwat said, “Shukla is the student of a reputed English medium college. Chaturvedi had planned to extort Rs10 lakh from the parents of the boy and promised to give Rs3 lakh to Shukla.”

The child that the kidnappers had picked up is son of a labour contractor.

Assistant commissioner of police Rajan Bhogale said, “Azad works in a multiplex while his friend Tushar is into fabrication business. While waiting near KRB Chowk to get a Tempo they spotted the two men on bike around 3.30 pm. They both had worn helmets, hand gloves and covered their faces with cloth. The fact that created doubt in Azad and Tushar’s minds was that the duo on bike had covered the number plate of their vehicle with white paper. Hence, they waited to watch the alleged kidnappers’ movement.”

According to the officer, a school van reached the spot and three schoolchildren, including a girl, alighted from the van.

Bhogale said, “When these kids were walking home, the kidnappers started the bike and followed them and stopped them. While the biker was speaking to the kids, pillion rider Shukla lifted one of the boys and hid him in the long jacket that he was wearing, and they drove away.

Seeing these bikers lifting the boy, Azad and Tushar also started their bike and followed the kidnappers.

“They chased the kidnappers for nearly 10 minutes and managed to dash the latter’s bike. Shukla fell from the bike along with the boy after the hit but Chaturvedi, who was riding the bike, managed to gain control and fled. Azad and Tushar nabbed Shukla with the help of other residents and handed over him to the police,” Bhogale said.
