If you are among those people who fall under the category of repeated traffic offenders, then here is a piece of news you can’t afford to miss.

Violating a traffic rule more than three times may prove costly soon in the near future as simply paying a fine, wont help you get away. You might stand to get your licence suspended for a period of 10 days to six months, depending on the gravity of the offence.

Officials in the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) said that in a bid to curb the issue of repeated traffic offenders in the city, it had requested the state government to make a presentation to the Central Government to appropriately change the Central Motor Vehicle Act enabling them to suspend the licences of repeat traffic offenders.

Pune regional transport officer Arun Yeola said that the state government had sent the proposal to the central government, as this rule could be implemented across the country. “We will then be able to suspend the offenders’ licences for one to six months. Under the transport development council, ministry of road transport with the central transport authority will decide in this regard and only then they can make amendment in the central motor vehicle act.”

As of now the Pune city traffic police department send the licences of traffic offenders to Pune RTO after which the RTO takes appropriate action. However the traffic police department also want some changes in the act so they could take action on the spot.

Deputy commissioner of police, traffic, Vishwas Pandhare said, “It is really tough to take action against such repeat traffic offenders. All we can do is catch hold of the traffic offenders each time they do an offence and submit their licence to the RTO. If there is some changes done in the Central motor vehicle act, we can take action and ensure that the number of such regular traffic offenders can be brought down.”

Both the RTO and the Pune City Traffic police believe that once this rule comes into action it will be easy for them to suspend licenses and take action in a more systematic manner.
