Sanam Hasan's parents allege foul play in city police investigation.

On January 23, 2013, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inspector Deepali Ghadge lodged a complaint against Sanam’s friend Mohnish Vijay Bolate for causing death by negligence under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Mohnish, a manager of the firm where Sanam used to work part-time, had organised the surprise party to celebrate her 19th birthday on October 2, 2012. Sanam is reported to have consumed vodka and whisky.

Around 2 am on October 3, Mohnish gave her lemon juice as she had complained about vomitting and was feeling uncomfortable. He rushed her to Ruby Hall Clinic around 9 am only when her condition worsened. Later, the doctors declared her dead. Even as October 2 was a dry day, Mohnish had brought 24 beer bottles, one McDowell’s whisky bottle and one of vodka. Mohnish was granted bail by the court of judicial magistrate (first class).

Unanswered questions

Call logs tampered with?
Nagina and Laique suspect that the mobile call records of Sanam were tampered with. The deceased’s parents claim that the call details of her maternal uncle wishing her late night is missing. They also said that all the communication details between Mohnish and Sanam on social networking sites are missing. Mohnish is said to have a criminal past.

How footballer Sanam could die of heart disease?
Sanam was a football player and did her regular gym sessions. According to her parents, chances of her dying of heart ailments are very rare.

They allege that the city police closed the case by hurriedly concluding that the victim died due to ‘alcoholic intoxication with ischemic heart disease’ without filing an first information report (FIR). It was when the case was transferred to CID on the victims’ kin’s insistence did the investigating agency lodged a complaint against Mohnish.

The victim
Sanam Hasan (19) was a second year fashion design student of Symbiosis college in Vimannagar. Her parents had visited her from Mumbai to celebrate her birthday that falls on October 2.

Sanam was also working part-time at a reputed international brands store Aldo in Phoenix Mall.

With her parents staying at a city hotel, Sanam attended a surprise party organised by Mohnish and attended by her college and other friends at a flat in Brahma Sun City apartment in Wadgaon Sheri. Prior to this incident, Sanam had got a part time job in a reputed international brands store name Aldo in Phoenix mall.

Initially, a case of accidental death was registered with Yerawada police station.

Parents speak
Andheri resident Sanam’s parents Laique and Nagina along with her brother had come down to city from Mumbai to celebrate her birthday on October 2 evening.

They stayed in a hotel and permitted their daughter to celebrate her birthday along with her 22 college and workplace friends.

On the morning of October 3, 2012, Sanam was rushed to Ruby Hall Clinic where she was declared dead and post-mortem was conducted at Sassoon General Hospital. Sanam’s friends informed her parents about the entire incident.

Getting poor response from the city police, Sanam’s parents approached home minister RR Patil and the case was transferred to CID after a week.
