In a freak incident, a 15-year-old boy was hurt when a bullet was fired accidentally from a gun abandoned by robbers at Jijamata Chowk in Walhekarwadi area of Chinchwad on Monday evening.

The injured boy, identified by the Chinchwad police as Arif Allaudeen Bhagban, was rushed to hospital by onlookers on a motorbike.

He is undergoing treatment at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital.

Doctors treating Arif said the bullet went through his liver and he has been kept in the intensive care unit.
Deputy commissioner of police (zone III) Shahji Umap said, "The incident took place at 4.15 pm at Jijamata Chowk, Walhekarwadi in Chinchwad when three unidentified men on a motorbike reached the Ganesh Super Market."

He said, "The shop is owned by Sitaram Chaudhari. The trio wanted to commit a robbery at the store. They asked Chaudhari for a soft drink. When he went to the room adjacent to the shop to fetch the bottles of soft drink, they tried to lock him up in the room."

Umap added, "However, Sitaram struggled. During the scuffle, he snatched a countrymade revolver from a robber and raised an alarm. The robbers fled the spot and Sitaram chased them. However, they managed to escape on the motorbike."

According to Umap, "Meanwhile, a number of people had assembled at the shop and suddenly a bullet went off from the gun lying in the shop. The bullet struck Arif, who was among the onlookers and he collapsed."

He added, "We are still to find out the circumstances in which the bullet was fired from the gun. We suspect some onlooker may have fired the bullet accidentally while examining the gun, which we have seized."

Umap said, "Arif was standing at a Chinese food-cum-fruit stall of a relative near Sitaram's shop. He had rushed to Sitaram's shop out of curiosity on hearing the latter's cries for help."
