Pune was one of the worst-affected cities when swine flu outbreak happened in the country in 2009. So the fears have come again with death toll from Swine flu rising everyday.

Iamin caught up with one 2009 survivor of swine flu who shared his experience of successfully fighting the virus.

Barely 15-years-old, Gaurav Limaye was diagnosed with swine flu in 2009. “I was suffering from persistent cough and cold and went for check-up to a general physician and was detected with the H1N1 virus. At that point of time, PMC-run Naidu Hospital near Pune Station was the only place where swine flu patients were being treated, so I was admitted there,” says Limaye.

Fortunately for him, he was diagnosed in the early stage of the disease and did not face too many health issues. “I clearly remember that there were many other children infected by the virus on my floor and although we were kept in isolation, we were taken very good care of. By the end of one week of medication and rest, I had recovered from the disease,” he recalls.

Limaye is currently pursuing a course in Biotechnology from DY Patil College and leads a completely normal life. However, with the rise in the number of swine flu cases in the city, he says people should know the importance of being aware of symptoms and get a swine flu test done at the earliest. He added that it is essential that the disease is detected early, so that it can be immediately treated.

Limaye said that most people are reluctant about getting admitted into government hospitals but he will always encourage people to get treated at government-run hospitals, because they are adept at handling swine flu cases better.
