Renowned cartoonist RK Laxman celebrated his 92nd birthday among family, friends and well-wishers on Thursday. Wheeled in at the basement of his residence, Laxman looked at ease to be present among the people he knew. One face that brought a welcome smile to his face was that of educationist SB Mujumdar.
He acknowledged each one who came to wish him.
“He has been associated with Symbiosis and our family since 1985. What I really appreciate and admire about him is his values and morals. Above all, I truly want to request the government to seriously think of conferring the Bharat Ratna on him. Sachin Tendulkar can wait for now as Laxman truly deserves the honour,” Mujumdar said.
Laxman’s daughter-in-law Usha said, “It is only of late that he is comfortable with the idea of birthday celebrations. He never wanted his birthday to be an event. The only part of celebrations that he enjoys is the cake. He loves sweet and demands one like a child before every meal,” said Usha.
Laxman’s wife Kamala was overwhelmed with the love of people who visited the family. She said, “I am more of a mother to him than a wife now. He calls me amma and I call him baby! Pune has been so welcoming to us and we love being here. We hope to continue here as long as God wants us to.”
Visitors reminisced about their memories with him from how he loved to bargain on Laxmi Road to his nature loving habits.
