Pune: Though the rain has brought much needed relief from the city’s usual dry and hot weather, it has also brought in monsoon maladies. City based doctors agree that rains have brought along the season of diarrhoea, viral infections, skin infections and respiratory ailments.

“Generally people get drenched in rains which is why they get infected too. I have 30 fresh cases each day related to viral fever. Most of the cases come in when it is serious as they do not take proper care once the signs of viral start showing,”said general physician Dr Avinash Bhondwe. According to him, the rains cause cough and cold which leads to breathing related ailments like asthma.

Paediatrician Pramod Jog said, “kids have a tendency to develop viral as they get in contact with others in school and play grounds. I attend to over 5 new cases of children below 12 years who either have cough, fever or indigestion. A parent should start immediate care when their child develops running nose. This is the first sign of viral infection in children.”

With high prevalence of Dengue and Malaria in the city, it is essential for a patient to know when to take tests for vector borne diseases. A viral infection spreads to more than one in a family and a community but it is not necessary for a vector borne disease to infect more than one in a family.

“As viral is self limiting, one should not take it lightly if it persists for more than two days. If a patient feels feverish and there is a lot of body pain and headaches, NS1 tests for Dengue and Malaria should be done immediately,” added Suresh Shinde, consultant physician.

Prevention better than cure

Do not get wet in the rains, if you do, change to warm clothes immediately.
Avoid eating outside or drinking water from unknown places.
Drink a lot of fluids, soups and eat fruits and healthy vegetables if you start feeling weak or feverish.
Sneezing and running nose are initial signs, start a treatment immediately after your first sneeze.
Use paracetamols in case of fever but only in emergency.
If fever persists for more than two days, consult a doctor and get your blood tests done.
