Pune cops nab five, solve 42 chain-snatching cases

Suspects operated in Hinjewadi, Sangvi, Bhosari, Pimpri, Chinchwad and Nigdi

With the arrest of five persons, a special team of Pune police zone III on Tuesday claimed to solve 42 chain-snatching incidents recorded in Hinjewadi IT Park and Pimpri-Chinchwad in the recent past.

The arrested persons were identified as Nilesh Sanjay Saste (20), Prashant Pavansingh Thakur (19), ,Muzmil alias munna Jakir Ansari (20), Rahul Baburav Gavali and Ashok Shankar Matke (20), all residents of Chinchwad.

The police recovered two motorcycles and 600 gm gold totally worth Rs20 lakh from the suspects’ possession. They  operated in Hinjewadi, Sangvi, Bhosari, Pimpri, Chinchwad and Nigdi, said the police.

A special team had spotted two suspects changing the number plate of their motorcycle in Mohanagar on Monday. The suspects were then interrogated and they revealed names of accomplices.

Deputy commissioner of police (zone III) Shajai Umap told dna, “The suspects are residents of Chinchwad and were friends. They wanted to earn easy money. As a result, they decided to snatch gold chains. The suspects used to hand over stolen ornaments to Ashok Matke, to sell them to jewellers.”

Cricketer arrested
Ashok Shankar Matke (20) who has arrested by the special team for his alleged involvement in 42 chain-snatching cases, told the police that he is a player of Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) . He claimed that VCA had sent him to Sri Lanka for a cricket tournament in the recent past. Deputy commissioner of police (zone III) Shahaji Umap told dna, “During interrogation, Matke told us he is a player of VCA and had gone to Sri Lanka for a cricket tournament. He was stealing gold chains to earn easy money. He used to sell the stolen gold to jewellers in Pimpri-Chinchwad and city areas. All the suspects are staying in Chinchwad.”
