To teach a lesson to the tyre shop owners who spray nails on the roads to puncture vehicles’ tyres, Pune police commissioner Gulabrao Pol has issued an order to all police station in-charges to conduct clandestine operations in their areas and keep a close tab on such garage owners. Pol has asked police stations to take stringent action against those found spraying nails.

Pol said in his order that it has been observed that many garage owners are throwing nails on the main roads to puncture vehicles passing through the areas near their shops. They have been making a lot of money from this practice. But this not only causes a loss of time and money, but also can cause serious accidents. “It is not only loss of their crucial time, but it would also cause a fatal accidents,” the order states.

Pol has also asked the police station in-charges to intensify the patrolling of beat marshals and should also check the ‘nail infested’ roads and areas where the most cases have been registered. Moreover, they have also been asked to keep a close tab on the garage owners who are getting benefits.

The order has specifically mentioned that ‘stringent ‘ action should have been taken against the suspect. According to the Pune city police records, about 20 such incidents have been reported from different parts of the city. The PCMC area has reported highest number of such incidents in the recent past.

Bikers on the Pune-Mumbai highway had faced this problem several occasion in the recent past. The incidents commonly registered are near Empire Estate in Chinchwad. Residents had even done a roadblock and called the police and later picked up the nails. Senior inspector MA Vidhate, incharge of Pimpri police station said, “We have deployed special beat marshal to inspect such areas where nails were found.” Vidhate said, “We have not yet registered a complaint but we have questioned some tyre shop owners in the nearby area.”

There are 35 tyre shops on Pune-Mumbai Highway on the Pimpri-Chinchwad stretch and it is difficult to trace the culprits. We are now taking the help of local residents to keep a watch.”
