If dusting out files by PMC -- of plots allotted for development of sports venues -- is any indication, the plots will henceforth be used more for sports than any other purpose. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to cancel the contracts and start the process for reallocation of the plots.

PMC sports committee chairman Anil Tingre said, “PMC had given these lands to various sports bodies but we found that some of the lands have not been developed. Therefore recently, PMC’s standing committee sent a proposal to the general body to terminate the contracts with those bodies. Once the contract is terminated in the general body meeting, PMC can carry out development of those plots.”

Welcoming the PMC’s decision, Taluka Sports Officer Rajesh Bagul said on Saturday that it was a good move by PMC commissioner Mahesh Pathak to re-allocate the venues for various sports.

PMC had picked 17 venues in 2008 and allotted them to various associations organising games in the city. However, the associations failed to develop them and put them to proper use. For instance, the land which was marked at Sahakarnagar for basketball has been lying unused. Some other venues were being used as a garden or for a swimming pool, which is against the agreement signed between the District Sports Office and the associations.

“It’s late, but not too late to re-allocate these places for the respective sports. This will enable the Zilla Parishad to organise sports events,” Bagul said.

“For basketball the PMC located a vacant place in Sahakarnagar, and unfortunately it has not been developed, but luckily for us nothing has come up in the area, like the other plots, and we have requested the concerned persons to develop the land and hand it over to us so that we can organise tournaments there,” Lalit Nahata, secretary of Pune Basketball Association, said.
Hadapsar will have handball and shooting, while football and hockey will be in Kirkee, Bagul added.
