Residents of elite locality of Prabhat Road, Law College road showed the strength of unity in forcing Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to scrap the idea of installing stalls on the canal road which connects Karve Road with Law College Road and further connects to Prabhat Road.

PMC plans to create stalls for the vendors on the canal road. The prominent residents of these localities including filmmaker Amol Palekar, activist Vishwambhar Choudhari and local corporator Madhuri Sahasrabudhe held a meeting with PMC commissioner Vikas Deshmukh and raised strong objection against PMC's plan. The residents claim that the municipal commissioner has given assurance that the civic administration will not go forward if there is opposition.

As per the Supreme court's directions, the corporation is carrying out a survey of all the vendors carrying out business in the PMC limit. The vendors on the streets will be removed and rehabilitated at locations where they will not create problems for traffic or pedestrians.

BJP Corporator Madhuri Sahasrabudhe, who represents ward number 36 which covers areas of Law college road and Prabhat road said,"The civic administration had a plan of installing stalls at the side of the canal road. According to the plan, The canal road from SNDT college to Prabhat road were suppose to have 66 stalls. Residents of the area are against these stalls and came together to oppose the plan."

As the complaints against PMC's plan were growing, some prominent residents of the area came together to create a pressure group and over hundred of residents of the area met Deshmukh in the last week. Shiv Sena MLA Chandrakant Mokate, leader of BJP in PMC Ganesh Bidkar were also accompanying the residents during the meeting. Sahasrabudhe said,"After hearing our demands, the municipal commissioner has stated that the civic administration will look for alternate location for rehabilitation of the vendors and PMC officials will hold a discussion with the local residents and only then will the location be finalised."
