This year’s batch of Maharashtra police shooters chosen for the national police shooting championship is a privileged lot.
They are being trained by none other than Olympian shooter Gagan Narang. The Olympian is training the 28-member team for the upcoming 7th All India Police Shooting Championship to be held on October 22.

As many as 200 policemen across state had participated in the state-level selection test for the championship which was held in Daund last month.

Of these, the first three medal holders in 17 various shooting competitions like 10-metre rifle, pistol, big bore, etc. have been selected for the national event. In many cases, the same participants have taken part in various events and hence the number of selected members is 28.

This is for the first time that the All Indian Police Shooting Championship will be held in the state at the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sport Complex in the city.

Director general of police Sanjeev Dayal passed an order two days ago stating that the selected shooters should be allowed sufficient practice time in order to win maximum medals for Maharashtra.

From Tuesday, the 28 policemen and women are undergoing practice at Gagan Narang’s academy at Guns for Glory at Balewadi.

Academy director Pawan Singh said, “It’s a great honour and a responsibility on Gangan and me to ensure that the state police wins the maximum number of medals. We have less time for practice, but we are confident to succeed. For three days, we are observing the shooters in respect to their  standing positions, stances while shooting, etc. We will be providing them free training, guns and ammunition. Gagan will be holding three special lectures and matches with them and we will provide physical and mental training too.”
