Two persons, including a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) party worker, allegedly tried to sneak into Yerawada Central Jail on Saturday evening. However, neither the jail authorities nor the Yerawada police registered any case against them.

The Yerawada jail authorities, on October 13, had filed a case against one Mayur Sunil Shinde (24), who had gone to the jail and asked to meet gangster Alok Bhalerao saying he was his brother.

“The MNS party worker and his friend had registered their names with the jail authorities to meet one of the undertrials. While going to meet the undertrial, the sentry checked their documents and found that he was neither a relative nor a lawyer. Also, he did not carry any special order to meet the undertrial,” police inspector Shivaji Bendre of Yerawada police station said. The duo also created a scene outside the main gate when the sentry disallowed them.

When questioned why they were not arrested Bendre said, “The Yerawada jail authorities just submitted their application. They did not seek to lodge a complaint against the two. Hence, we did not register a case against them. We warned them and released them.” Sources from jail said, “The two used political connections. In Bhalerao’s case they could have warned him but they arrested him. They could done the same with these two.”
