After his success in getting the Janlokpal Bill passed in the parliament with his Gandhian ways, anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare has now announced that he will undertake nationwide tours to form “watchdog bodies”. He will identify and bring together men and women of character to set up a mechanism that can work as a watchdog for the effective implementation of Lokpal and other such laws.

Expressing the need for passing Right to Reject, Right to Recall, providing powers to Gram Sabha and Daptar Dirangai to cut corruption further, Hazare said on Wednesday that a mechanism for implementation of laws was equally important. He said that retired judges, bureaucrats and police officers who wanted to join fight against corruption can send their names on post cards to Ralegan Siddhi. Besides, he would undertake nationwide tours to identify such volunteers.

There was a need to ensure that nobody took undue advantage of the right to agitate. Such people should be prevented, Hazare said, adding that that he would identify men and women of character and train them to watch out for corrupt elements.

Elaborating the idea of a watchdog, Hazare said it would be a mechanism of decentralised committees.

It will comprise locals. He also appealed to the citizens to contribute Rs5 each to create funds for this. Forming such committees at the village, taluka, district and state levels would be a big task and would need money. “I have never collected money for any work, but for this cause, we would need money and I appeal to all the citizens to contribute Rs five each.”

Hazare recalled that he had penned a book on his eight-year-long fight for the Right to Information Act in Maharashtra. He said that a book on Lokpal would also be brought out so that people could learn how important it was for them.

Hazare announced that during his nine-day fast, an amount of Rs1.5 lakh was collected through donations. There was not one single donor who donated a big amount; all the donations were of Rs 10, 20 or 50. He said that the details of these donations would be put on the internet to ensure transparency.

Doctors monitoring Anna’s health announced in the morning that he has lost half a kilogram of weight in last 24 hours and since last Tuesday when he launched the fast, he has lost a total of 5.1 Kg of weight.
