Pune: Several students despite having in-depth knowledge about subjects, especially in Engineering section, fail to perform or impress employers during personal interviews due to lack of certain skills like communication, body language, business etiquette and language. In order to overcome this barrier, colleges are adopting new measures and have started various professional skill development programmes. Some colleges are tying up with finishing schools and training students on how to carry a professional image and enhance human as well as professional relationships. The students are given voice and accent training and writing for business. At Bharati Vidyapeeth's Engineering college, they have started a full-fledged certificate programme in executive excellence and the entire programme is spread over all semesters.

"When students take admission for first year engineering, they are raw and this is the time, when you can mould them with the help of professional skills and prepare for the industry," said Dr Anand Bhalerao, the Principal and Dean of College of Engineering, Bharati Vidyapeeth.

He added that there were several instances when students despite having good knowledge of subject, used to fail in interviews during campus recruitment and the reason is lack of professional attitude, command over language and low level of confidence.

"In order to overcome these issues, we have now tied up with Dale Carnegie Finishing School and started a programme in Executive Excellence in which students are trained in language, people and time management, cultivation of self confidence, motivating people and gaining cooperation and which are needed for a true professional," he said.

Other than corporate behaviour, the students are also trained in fluent English speaking, right pronunciation, grammar, sentence clarity and basic conversational skills.

The Head of the Communication Skill at College of Engineering, Pune (COEP), Atul Patil said that at COEP, apart from the subject knowledge, the students are trained for professional skills and with the help of various modules, they are made ready for the industry.

"We have some computer based programmes where students can watch some sample interviews and after completing the exercise, they can give a virtual interview, which gets recorded and after that the computer gives feedback and suggests improvement to the students so that he or she would not repeat the same mistake," he said.

At Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT), feeling a need of such soft skill training for the students, they have started a similar programme which can help students during the campus interviews.

"All our efforts are aimed at acquiring best possible employability and entrepreneurship skills by our students and accordingly we are organizing various training programs both by industry experts as well as professionals, to equip them in soft-skills," said Hemant Mali.

It's not just the colleges but University of Pune too has introduced skill development programmes in the varsity department where students can enroll themselves while studying in the different departments and hone their skills.
