Nearly two weeks have passed after the death of a Koregaon Park area watchman, who was allegedly beaten up by an angry doctor, but the police are yet unable to trace the doctor.

Koregoan Park police said they were clueless about the whereabouts of the accused, Abhijit Khanvilkar. This despite the fact that the doctors’ residential building shares its compound wall with the police station.

Sachin Kasbe, a relative of Sarejrao alleged negligence on part of the police. “The incident took place on July 27 and the complaint was taken by police on July 30. The doctor was last seen in his housing society premises on August 5. Police said Sarjerao was manhandled thrice by him on the same day, but no action was taken against him. Had the case been against us, our entire family would have been detained by the police immediately till they found the culprit. Why are not the police doing the same with Khanvilkar’s family,” he asked.

The deceased watchman Sarjerao Ganpat Sathe (47) was allegedly assaulted by Dr Khanvilkar on July 27 for not opening the gates for an ambulance of his hospital. Sathe’s wife Usha told the police that Khanvilkar assaulted the watchman with a stick, and pushed him on the cement platform in the watchman’s cabin. The next day, Sarjerao was found lying on the road unconscious. He died on August 5. Following this, Sarjerao’s wife Usha lodged a police complaint against Khanvilkar. The doctor is on the run since then.

Inspector (crime) Rajendra Mulik, investigating the case, said, “We recorded the statements of his colleagues and eye-witnesses. We have come to know that Sarjerao had turned up early that day at society to collect a salary advance for his daughter’s wedding. It was another watchman on duty who didn’t open the gates, but the doctor assaulted Sarjerao for it. After being beaten up he lost control and fell down. The doctor didn’t stop there, held him by his collar and dragged him to the society secretary.”

When the doctor didn’t get support from the secretary, he abused and threatened Sarjerao. Sarjerao then approached his colleagues and narrated the incident. The same night, some locals found him sitting on a pavement and looked weak. The next morning, he was found lying unconscious on a roadside. Mulik added that police were keeping an eye on all the airport points, hospitals, and the doctor’s family members.

Meanwhile, Khanvilkar has reportedly sought legal help and will soon file a petition for anticipatory bail in Shivajinagar sessions and district court.
