Pune: When the entire city is reeling with water cuts, Nowrosjee Wadia College Campus including Ness Wadia Building, College of Engineering, boys and girls hostel are unaffected by water cuts.
Thanks to the college's rain water harvesting project started four years back, which has a well developed borewell network catering to the needs of 15,000 students.

"In the time of water crisis like this we are relying on open wells and bore wells of the campus, which recharged all throughout the year. We no longer depend on the corporation water for any domestic use," said Modern Education Society's (MES) secretary Dr M. N. Andar

"The rain water harvesting project has recharged the two bore wells and one open well in the campus. The groundwater is used for the domestic needs for toilets, gardening, cooking, lab requirements and hostel needs total to 50-55 thousand liters per day." said Abhay Hake, Vice Principal of MES College of Engineering.

The total water requirement of the 5 -6 residential quarters and hostels with 300 students each are also fulfilled with groundwater. The college saves approximately 50 thousand liters of water supplied by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC),this amount is equivalent to the per day water requirement of an average 100 families of the city.

While the college has completed construction works in the past using the ground water instead of corporation water, this year despite of water scarcity the college carries out maintenance work in college without burdening the PMC.

"Currently we are doing renovation and maintenance works and not using corporation water for it. There is enough ground water for it," added Hake.

The Wadia is a model educational organisation for city based residential societies, commercial organizations and institutions.
