A month after Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) made it mandatory for all builders to register their names with the civic body, nearly 450 builders have approached the civic authorities.
For many who are yet to complete the registration procedure, PMC has made it clear that their building plans will not get its stamp of approval unless builders are registered with the municipal corporation.

The collapse of a retaining wall at Dattawadi claiming the lives of three women in June woke up the lax civic body to take such a move. Before this incident, only structural engineers and architects had to register with PMC and they could be blacklisted if found responsible for any mishap. However, no such registration was required for builders.

Following the Dattawadi wall collapse incident, PMC has made it mandatory for builders also to register their names with PMC.
The order came into effect from September 1 and a month after that 450 builders have approached PMC for registration. Out of these builders, 175 builders have registered with PMC through manual procedure while other have applied online.

According to the building permission department officials of PMC, they have received 450 applications but many of them have not completed the procedure such as payment for registration or submitting required documents.

dna tried to contact the office-bearers of Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI) Pune but they were unavailable for comment.

PMC gets teeth
Earlier, PMC did not have the authority to take any direct action against a builder in case of any mishap in the building which he has constructed such as collapsing of a building or part of it. With registration being made compulsory for builders, PMC can blacklist builders and hold their plans in case they are found guilty in the mishap.
