Come Sunday and the city will be decked up to welcome royalty. The first scheduled visit of the British royal couple, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall,  is expected to be short yet effective.

John Fernandes, general manager, Turf Club House shared, “The couple has planned a three-stop schedule which includes a visit to Serum Institute and the stud farm, Kirkee War Cemetery and high tea at the club house of Royal Western India Turf Club Ltd.”

Remembering martyrs

The first stop for the royal couple is Kirkee War Cemetery (KWC) to conduct a personal act of remembrance (Remembrance Sunday) to commemorate the men and women who were killed during the World War I and II and other conflicts. The otherwise quiet KWC is witnessing a lot of activity as the staffers are busy carrying out beatification work ahead of the royal visit. The grass is being trimmed, the footpaths repaired and stringent security assessment is underway.

The royal couple will reach Pune airport at 1.50 pm and leave for the KWC at 2 pm.

Officials at the KWC said, “The royal family members will be conducting a personal act of remembrance to commemorate the men and women who were killed during the two world wars and other conflicts, particularly the fall of the Commonwealth. The royal couple will also meet members of Commonwealth War Grave Commission, which is responsible for maintenance of the cemetery.”

Global vaccine company

At 3 pm, the royal couple will next proceed to the Serum Institute of India (SII), the vaccine production facility of one of the world’s largest vaccine manufacturers, founded by Dr Cyrus Poonawala.
SII exports vaccines to 130 countries and is known for its philanthropic work. It is learnt from sources that a few months ago, the Poonawalas met members of the royal family where they explained the work that goes on at SII, which greatly interested the royal couple.

Fernandes added, “While Prince Charles will be at the institute, Camilla will take a look at the stud farm of the Poonawalas.”

High tea at Turf Club

The royal couple is expected to be at the Turf Club by 4 pm. The high tea at the club house will have the city’s who’s who in attendance to mingle with the royal couple. “Prince Charles loves open spaces and insisted that the decor be kept simple. He requested an open air area and wants the colonial charm intact at the venue. So, we are not doing much with the decor. As far as the food is concerned, there will be cocktails and a few snacks served,” said Fernandes.
