After a brief lull, criminals involved in smashing windshields of cars and committing thefts in the city are back.

On Tuesday, laptop and cash worth Rs3.5 lakh was stolen from a car parked outside a hotel in Karvenagar area on Tuesday.

Building contractor Krishna Vishwanath Waghmare (27) had left his car outside Kakde Shopping Centre in Karvenagar on Tuesday afternoon when the incident took place.

In his complaint with the Kothrud police, Waghmare said that the incident took place between 1.45 pm and 3.30 pm. He had gone to the office of sub registrar, which is in the same building, to register documents of a property deal when the incident took place.

Though the Kothrud police have started looking for the culprits, no arrests have been made so far.

Senior police inspector Sunil Darekar, who is in-charge of Warje Malwadi police station, said that Waghmare reached the sub registrar’s office around 1.45 pm. He left his car with the driver and went inside the office. Shortly after that, Waghmare’s driver went to have lunch leaving the car parked outside the shopping centre. The unidentified thieves smashed the glass window panes and stole the valuables.

According to Darekar, the incident came to light when Waghmare returned to the car after finishing his work at the sub registrar’s office around 3.45 pm.

He said, “We have checked the CCTV footage, but are unable to see the car in the recording. We are questioning the security staff.”
