An article published in a monthly magazine run by celebrity astrologer Adinath Salvi has landed him in trouble. A Sangamner-based activist has complained to the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) health department objecting to the article which said if a couple chanted a particular mantra for 108 times, they would be blessed with a male child. The health department has sought legal opinion before taking any action based on the complaint.

Ganesh Borhade, a Sangamner based activist, had written first letter to the PMC’s health department on October 28, in which Borhade stated, “The magazine named Brahma Likhit had carried an article which mentioned that if a couple chants a particular mantra for 108 times, it will be blessed with a male child. I took strong objection to that article and since Salvi published that article, I complained against him to the health department of PMC. I demanded action under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.”

After PMC received the complaint, the health department sought a legal opinion on the issue. The officials of health department said, “Replying to our query, the legal department replied saying it was a violation of act, but it required original copy of the magazine.” Following the reply, Salvi was summoned and he also submitted his reply. When his reply was sent to the legal department, the department gave an opinion saying that action could be taken only if it was an advertisement.

Borhade submitted an original copy of the magazine to the department and sent one more letter claiming that action could be taken against such articles also. When ST Pardeshi, PMC’s medical officer, was asked about the issue, he said, “We have again sought legal opinion before taking any action. Once we get a reply, we will take further action.”

dna tried contacting Salvi, but he was not available for comment.
