It is good as well as bad news for the mango lovers in the state. The bad news is that due to the prolonged monsoon and winter season in the state , the production of mango has been hampered and hence it has arrived a month late in the market in the state.

On the other hand, the traders have claimed that the there is good news for the people as the king of fruits, Alphonso (Happus) mango will be available even in the month of the June and July this year in the state.

Speaking to dna, one of the leading mango traders of the APMC Kishor Ladkat said, "The prices started off high because the arrival of mango was delayed this year due to prolong monsoon and winter season in the state. It has affected the production of the fruits and thus the fruit has arrived late in the market."

The traders and farmers from Ratanagiri claimed that this year the mango like Alphonso and Lalbagh will be available in the month of June and July in the state. "Every year the Alphonso and Lalbagh will not be available after May 10 in the market, however, this year the scenario is different the mangoes will be available in the market."

Presently, the Alphonso and Lalbagh have arrived in Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in the city. On Sunday six boxes (peti) had arrived in the market. One peti contains a minimum of four dozen and a maximum of 10 dozen mangoes.

The Alphonso is now available in the range of Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000 in the market. The fruit is mainly coming from Konkan belt and Bangalore regions. In summer supply of mango in APMC is almost 40,000 to 50,000 petis from Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Dharwad, Hubli and some parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Traders pointed out that the at present mangoes are transported in trucks from Konkan. Consequently, the fruits affects the quality, increases the diesel cost, handling charges, resulting in high price of the fruits.
