Known for his command over comedy, popular Marathi artiste Satish Tare passed away at a hospital in Juhu, Mumbai on Wednesday morning. The actor who had recently undergone a leg operation, also had a severely damaged liver. It is believed that Satish had been diagnosed with liver problems owing to excessive consumption of alcohol and the doctors had warned him to stay away from alcohol entirely. Close friends and colleagues suggest that Satish followed the warning strictly for the past two years but it was already too late.

Satish was a favourite among the Marathi audience, be it theatre, films or television. Some of his prominent roles include plays like Shyam Chi Mummy (opposite Nirmiti Sawant), films like Navra Maza Navsacha, Valu, Balak Palak, Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local and TV shows like Eka Lagnachi Dusri Gosht and the reality stand-up show Fu Bai Fu.

A multi-talented artiste Satish was known for his pleasant personality. An actor, writer, director and a singer, he was also a complete package in performing arts.

Gol Gojiri, Satish’s new play (with South Indian actress Uma Devraj), which he dedicated to the memory of his late father Jayant Tare and brother Sunil Tare, had recently opened in theatres in Mumbai and Pune. The play was the first instance of a South Indian actor acting in a mainstream Marathi play.

His demise has come as a sad shock to the entire fraternity. Ravi Jadhav, the director of Balak Palak, said, “Satish, a star (Tara) of the theatre and film fraternity has fallen. A talented artiste with a great presence of mind and a sense of humour has left us today.”

His colleague, actor Subodh Bhave, also expressed grief over the untimely death of his co-actor and said, “A multi-talented artiste in the truest sense of the term and an actor who genuinely made others happy is not among us anymore. But whenever a smile is cast upon any of our faces, we will think of Satya. Wherever he is, he will make the place better.”

Appreciated for his innate sense of timing when it came to comedy, his early demise is perhaps the only instance where he missed his timing. A great loss to the Marathi entertainment fraternity as well as for the fans and audience.
