Pune: Good news for high-fliers, the city will now be connected to 14 existing domestic destinations, with the completion of Modernisation of Air field Infrastructure (MAFI) likely to be completed by Wednesday.
The new flight schedule will come into effect with the summer schedule, that is on April 16. The Pune Lohegaon airport will then boast of 64; it already sees 50 flights a day currently.
These flights will connect to destinations including Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi, Bengalurur, Kolkata, Goa, Indore and Nagpur. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has confirmed eight movements that will be coming into effect from Wednesday.
Pune Airport official said,"With the increasing demand for domestic flights in the existing sector, it was essential to add new flights to existing destinations. On Tuesday, we have approvals for eight of the 14 flight movement, which will be coming into affect from Wednesday."
The official added, "We are working in getting clearance from Indian Air Force (IAF), headquarters. Moreover, we are also working with other airports for time slots. We are positive that soon we will be able to get the final approval for the remaining slots by the end of this week."
With the airport now operational for 24-hours, there are some changes in international flight timings as well. The flight to Frankfurt will now arrive Pune at 03:50 and take-off at 05:25 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturday. The Pune-Sharjah flight will arrive at 14:10 and depart at 15:40 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
President of Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), S.K. Jain said, "Looking at the current trend, Pune needs more flights for domestic and international destinations. With the automated system in place, less time will be required to get clearance."
