55 illegal mobile towers to be pulled down

Local residents of Nigdi-Pradhikaran area are fighting for the cause.

Electricity supply to an illegally operating mobile tower at sector 28, Nigdi-Pradhikaran has been disconnected by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) as demanded by local residents of Nigdi-Pradhikaran area, who has been fighting for the cause.

Reportedly, local residents had written to Pimpri-Chinchwad New Township Development Authority (PCNTDA) demanding action against the tower claiming that it has been operating illegally for several years. Following this, PCNTDA requested the MSEDCL to cut power supply to the illegal tower.

The PCNTDA has decided to pull down as many as 55 mobile towers which have been erected without its permission. PCNTDA carried out the survey of the illegal structures and found out that 55 mobile towers on terraces of various apartments and buildings were functioning without the required permission from Pradhikaran.

Pradhikaran Nagari Kriti Samiti has expressed satisfaction over Tuesday’s action by MSEDCL and PCNTDA. Samiti members have been fighting against the menace of towers in Nigdi-Pradhikaran area for several years.

Samiti president Vijay Patil said, “We are happy over the action taken by  the authorities. It will strengthen our fight against the illegal towers in twin town.”

“The danger of radiation from mobile towers has been highlighted before. The government also had to change the direction of a mobile tower in Mumbai after actress Juhi Chawla protested against radiation generated from it,” said a civic activist.

PCNTDA chief executive officer Dr Yogesh Mhase said, “The work of pulling down illegal mobile towers was stopped after some mobile companies moved to High Court and sought a stay on the action. However, the PCNTDA is verifying the case again.”

Of the 411, only 34 towers apply for regularisation
Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) offer to regularise illegal mobile towers by registering them with the civic body before March 31 has received lukewark response.

The PCMC had threatened to pull down the illegal towers which are not registered with it within the deadline. Of the 411 mobile towers in Pune, applications have been made to regularise only 34 mobile towers. The civic body is yet to take any action.

Civic officials recently held a meeting with the mobile company representatives at PCMC head office. PCMC additional commissioner Prakash Kadam and other civic officials attended the meeting.

The civic officials told the company representatives that PCMC will soon start to bring down the illegal towers. Representatives of mobile companies said that the charges set by the municipal corporations for permissions were too high.

The PCMC has generated Rs1.76 lakh in the form of fine from illegal towers over the last two years. If the towers get registered PCMC will generate revenue of Rs2 crore.
