In another development related to Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Tuesday, questioned former Gujarat director general of police (DGP) and former Ahmedabad police commissioner (CP) KR Kaushik - for four hours.

Meanwhile, the probe agency filed an application before the Gujarat high court (HC) seeking extension of service of IPS officer Satish Verma with it.

The court is likely to conduct hearing within this week or next week.According to sources, CBI sleuths questioned Kaushik - who was DGP during the 2007 state assembly elections and CP during the incident - regarding intelligence inputs received by him prior to the encounter of Thane-based college student Ishrat Jahan and three men by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) in 2004.

The retired IPS officer was questioned by the sleuths at an undisclosed location in Gandhinagar. His explanation was sought mainly about the genuineness of the intelligence inputs received by him prior to the incident.

Kaushik’s questioning followed that of additional DGP (ADGP) PP Pandey. The then joint commissioner of police at Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) was questioned on Monday.

After the encounter, DCB had claimed that Kaushik had received specific intelligence inputs about arrival of members of Pakistan-based terrorist outfits in the state. The police chief passed the input to Pandey, who asked then deputy commissioner of police, DCB, DG Vanzara, to verify and act upon if the inputs are genuine.

Subsequently, Ishrat and three others were eliminated in a fake encounter by the DCB officer and DCB came out with a claim that the victims were on a mission to kill chief minister Narendra Modi.

In 2011, the HC-appointed special investigation team (SIT) concluded that the encounter was not genuine. Satish Verma, incumbent IPS officer and member of the SIT, had played a key role in the conclusion that the encounter was a staged one. He was then ordered by HC to help CBI during further probe of the case.

Now, CBI has sought another extension for Verma’s service, up to June 30, to take the investigation to a conclusion.

The agency has submitted a note stating reasons for more service of Sharma in a sealed cover to the court.
