Retired director general of police, RB Sreekumar, has expressed doubts about the state government's intentions behind chargesheeting IPS officer Rahul Sharma.

"On the one hand, Sharma has been charged with keeping the phone data CDs and, thereby, hampering the investigation of riot cases. On the other hand, the state home department has not issued any chargesheet to any police officer named in the FIRs of those cases. Many people were killed in the areas of the city that were then under the jurisdiction of the named officers," Sreekumar said while talking to DNA.

"Even if it is accepted for the sake of argument that Sharma did not submit the CDs to the investigating officers, it cannot be denied that he submitted them to a legal forum higher than the IOs. The state home department can always ask for the CDs from the Nanavati Commission," he said.

The phone call CDs prepared by IPS officer Rahul Sharma during the investigation of some riot cases of Ahmedabad matter a lot for the state government as they can prove the alleged involvement of many politicians and police officials in the communal violence.

The CDs submitted by Sharma has the call details of almost all the officers and politicians present in the city during the riots. They disclose their location and the people they were in touch with when the riots were at the worst in Ahmedabad city. Sources in the police department said that the call details had brought many IPS officers and politicians under the scanner.

It is well known that the call details give the position of police officers who were present at crucial places during the riots but had done nothing to stop the mayhem.

The then commissioner of police PC Pande; joint commissioner of police (sector 2) MK Tandon; deputy commissioner of police (zone4) PB Gondia; assistant commissioner of police 'G' Division MT Rana; Meghaninagar police inspector (PI) KG Erda; Narod PI KK Mysorewala; DySP RJ Savani; DGP K Chakravorthy and the then DCP (zone 6) BS Jebaliya are among some of the police officers whose call details are contained in the CDs prepared by Sharma.
