All the four policemen summoned for questioning by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Ishrat Jahan encounter case, are either ill or someone in their family has fallen ill, or the officer himself is traceless.

Whatever be the truth, this is what the records of the police office where they are posted, say.

Incidentally, the Ishrat SIT has already questioned some of these officers but it has summoned them for a fresh round of questioning.

Tarun Barot is officially on ‘leave’ as his wife is unwell. DSP Mahesana, RV Savani, said Barot had joined as DySP in Mahesana but had gone one leave the same day as his wife is not well.

He is on leave since April 29, 2010, the date on which he joined as a DySP in Mahesana, Savani said.

Sources, however, said that Barot had gone underground as he was not available to the policemen who had gone to serve him the SIT’s summons.

“He was not available at his home. His father told the cops that Barot is attending to his wife who is hospitalised,” the source said. But the police have no knowledge of the hospital where Barot’s wife is undergoing treatment, the sources added.

Mukesh Vyas, a key aide of Barot for many years, was present with him during the Ishrat encounter.

Vyas was transferred to Mundra (in Kutch) after the hooch deaths of 2009.

“Vyas is on sick leave and we don’t know when he will be back,” a policeman at the Mundra police station told DNA over the phone.

Nizamuddin Saiyad is another Barot aide who has been associated with the DySP for the last 23 years. Saiyad, too, is not reachable.

Sources said that he is still posted in Detection of Crime Branch but no one has any knowledge of his whereabouts.

The senior-most among the policemen summoned by the Ishrat SIT is GL Singhal who has relinquished charge as SP, Gujarat anti-terrorist squad, but has not joined as DCP-Zone-1 of Vadodara. Singhal is also not reachable.

A senior police officer in Vadodara police said Singhal had neither reported for duty in Vadodara nor had he sent any communication in this regard.
