I renewed my car insurance last week and got an email confirmation. But I have not yet got the policy documents. Is the email confirmation sufficient to make a claim in case of an accident?

In case you have not received your policy documents, you must immediately get in touch with your Insurer. An email from the insurer is just an indication fact that the policy is renewed. You are required to carry the Certificate of Insurance along with other mandatory documents while driving at all times, and hence will need the documents from the insurer. Additionally, you may face some difficulties in the settlement of your claim without the policy documents. Hence, it is advised to get in touch with your insurer at the earliest through their customer service team to inquire about the policy documents.

I am 72 years and my wife is 66 years old. For the last five years we have two health insurance policies, one of which is a from our bank. Together the sum assured is Rs 11 lakh. Should we continue with both? Or can we surrender one of them? There does not seem to be much difference in the coverage because both policies did not cover my wife’s uterus surgery three years back.

It is advisable that you continue with both the policies considering your age, sum insured, and also the rising medical inflation and health care costs. With regards to specific treatments not being covered, it could be due to time bound exclusions like waiting periods. For example, a hysterectomy is usually covered after one or two years’ waiting period, depending upon the terms of the policy.
