The Aundh Hospital will soon be developed on the lines of the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH), and will be managed by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) YCMH.

During a visit to the PCMC early last week, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said that a proposal had been sent to the state health department which will bear the expenditure and will help run the Aundh Hospital.

He said that the state government had convened a meeting to discuss the proposal by the PCMC to allow the civic body to run the government-owned 400-bed Aundh Hospital and the
proposal was in final stage.

The PCMC chief medical officer, Dr Rajshekhar Iyer, told DNA, “It will help reduce the burden of the YCMH. It will be accessible to the residents of Sangvi, Pimple Saudagar, Pimple Nilakh, Rahatani and Aundh areas.”

There is no government hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad like the Sassoon General Hospital in Pune. So, poor patients from the industrial township and from nearby rural areas come to the civic body-run YCMH. As a result, there is a tremendous rush reported at YCMH.”

According to Census 2011, the population of Pimpri-Chinchwad is over 17 lakh.

Lakshman Jagtap, an independent MLA from Chinchwad assembly constituency, had reiterated several times that the Aundh Hospital in Sangvi was not being utilised to its full capacity, as very few people went there for treatment even though there was need. The suburb area is developing very fast and there is a need for such hospitals. Aundh Hospital has the potential to grow as a multispecialty hospital.

The YCMH in Pimpri is the largest civic hospital in the
jurisdiction of the PCMC, which was inaugurated on March 17, 1989. It started as a 100-bed hospital and has grown to a 750-bed multispecialty hospital. On an average 1,500 patients visit the OPD every day and the number goes up to 1,800 on Mondays and Thursdays.

The Aundh Civil Hospital started functioning in 2006. In the early years, the hospital received a good response from the citizens due the cardiac facility, but later the cardiac unit was shifted to Sassoon hospital. In 2010, ESI hospital was shifted to Mohannagar, Chinchwad, so the state government decided to start the civil hospital in a separate building. Accordingly, the Aundh Civil Hospital was shifted to the ESI Hospital building.
