All the multiplex chains screening the matches reported heightened cricket frenzy in packed auditoriums. “We were sold out at all the venues across the country,” said Rahul Singh, senior vice president (operations) at PVR Cinemas. The chain had telecasted the match at its properties in Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Allahabad and Ahmedabad.
Industry insiders revealed that while the other India matches screened earlier evoked a lukewarm response, the 100 per cent occupancy on Wednesday came as a blessing for multiplexes.
Cinemax Cinemas, that has operations across Maharashtra, also recorded housefull shows across all its properties. The tickets for the eight-hour match were priced between Rs300 and 500 with some cineplexes offering packages that included unlimited food and beverages.
“Most of our sales came from bulk bookings made by corporate houses and large groups of friends and families who were rooting for the home team,” said Tushar Dhingra, COO of Big Cinemas.
Meanwhile, restaurants, bars and lounges across the city also cashed in on the cricket mania by putting up LCD television sets and projector screens. Most bars had special offers on food and beverages during the match and many others had tried to recreate the ambience of a stadium in their premises. Several others had laid huge buffets and unlimited drinks priced between Rs2,000 and Rs5000.
“Cricket is best enjoyed along with food, booze and great company,” said software professional Seema Guha who watched the match with a group of friends at the Red Box lounge in Andheri.
