The Cantonment police are caught in a catch-22 situation in a fight between two women over the custody of a 2-year-old boy, Adarsh. The women are wives of a trader and a black magician.
The trader’s 33-year-old wife gave birth to the child following an alleged rape by Prakash Devidas Pawar, a resident of Ganesh Peth. She had approached Pawar in 2005 to help her husband, who was not doing well in business.
Pawar assured her that he would get rid of the evil spell. He took her to cities like Kolhapur and Kolkata, where he allegedly raped her. Later, she conceived and gave birth to the child.
Later, Pawar went to the businessman’s house in January this year and forced the couple to allegedly sign adoption papers at gunpoint and took away the child. The businessman’s wife approached the police against Pawar in March this year for raping and cheating her. He was then arrested.
“As the child is mine, I have approached the Cantonment police to ensure that Adarsh is given back to me. We have even tried to lodge a case of kidnapping against Pawar. I just want my son back,” said the woman.
According to victim’s family members, she is ready for a DNA test to prove her claim. However, Pawar’s wife, Pallavi, is unwilling to part with the child, as she is claiming that the adoption was done
legitimately.
Senior police inspector Sushma Chavan said the case was confusing. “One the one hand, we have the mother who has given birth to Adarsh and on the other, a woman who has the legal adoption papers,” Chavan said. The Cantonment police have also sought opinion of legal experts in the case.
