A mentally ill woman brutally killed her three-year-old son on Monday before attempting suicide at sector 4 in Ghansoli, police said. The accused has been identified as Varsha Shashikant Ghodke, 23.

“After Ghodke’s son Saurabh returned from school, she took him to the bathroom and slit his throat. Later, she tried to kill herself by slashing wrists,” ACP (Vashi Division) Mujeeb Shaikh said.
He said the accused must have taken the step due to her illness.

The incident came to light when Ghodke’s mother came to meet Saurabh. “My husband was sleeping in the hall but it seems she quietly took Saurabh to the bathroom and covered his mouth before killing him. She had a history of psychological problem,” said the accused’s mother, adding, “Her husband is a very nice person. We have not informed him yet.” Ghodke’s parents stay on the floor above their daughter’s house.

A couple of months back, Ghodke had started working as a sales girl in a private firm. In between, she had left the house for around three months and was staying with someone else. When she returned, we forgave her but soon understood that she had become mentally-ill. Since then, she was undergoing treatment.”

Ghodke’s husband Shashikant works as a BEST driver. “They got married in 2006. It is a custom in our family that girls are married to their maternal uncle and so she was married to Shashikant. Our father was a mathadi worker and we all stayed in the same building,” Ghodke’s brother Ishwar Birajdar said.

He added, “She was ill but we did think she would take this step. We were all very fond of Saurabh but now he is gone. We don’t care what happens to her.”

The Ghodke and Birajdar family stay at Swami Samarth society in Ghansoli. The accused has been admitted to Vashi’s NMMC Hospital and is said to be out of danger. A case has been registered against Ghodke with Koparkhairane Police under sections 302 (murder) and 309 (attempt to commit suicide). Koparkhairane Police Station’s Sr PI Arun Walture is conducting further investigation.
