On the eve of her ninth wedding anniversary, a 32-year-old chartered accountant flung her two children to their death from the 19th floor of her building and then committed suicide by jumping down herself.

Nidhi Gupta, 32, left behind a suicide note in which she said no one was to be held responsible for her death, said Vinayak Kakade, senior police inspector at Dindoshi police station. He added that Nidhi’s husband Pawan was sleeping at home at the time of the incident.

According to the police, Nidhi dressed her children — Gaurav, 6 and Mihika, 3 — for school and left her 9th-floor residence at 8.25am on Tuesday. When Chandrakant Chauhan, the lift-man and the only eye-witness, told her that the elevator was going up, she told him she didn’t want to go down anyway. “Nidhi and her kids got off on the 19th floor of the 21-storey building,” Chauhan said.

The moment Chauhan reached the ground floor of the Sahayadri Housing Complex building, he heard a loud thud.

“Chauhan rushed outside to find Mihika’s body lying on the ground. Moments later, Gaurav’s body came crashing down. Before he could sense what was happening, Nidhi crashed on the railings of the swimming pool before hitting the ground,” a police officer told DNA.

All three died on the spot. Chauhan said: “I was shocked and scared. I immediately informed Sunita, Nidhi’s sister in-law.”

“There was no reason for her to take such a drastic step. It was a usual morning… she went to drop her kids to school but no one imagined that this would happen,” Sunita said. Kakade said initial investigations have ruled out family or financial problems.

Nidhi used to work as a lecturer at the Ghanshyamdas Saraf Girls College of Arts and Commerce. Her husband is in the readymade garments’ export business. “The family lived at Haji Ali earlier. They shifted to Malad two years ago,” the police said.

The bodies of Nidhi, Gaurav and Mihika were sent to Bhagwati hospital for post-mortem.
