Will fill up posts meant for disabled: State tells court

The state government assured the Bombay high court on Friday that it will fill up the backlog of 1,818 posts reserved for persons with disabilities within two months.

    The state government assured the Bombay high court on Friday that it will fill up the backlog of 1,818 posts reserved for persons with disabilities within two months.

    A division bench of chief justice Mohit Shah and justice Roshan Dalvi were hearing a clutch of petitions, including public interest litigations seeking proper implementation of the Persons with Disabilities Act. Rameshchandra Sagar, principal secretary, social justice and special assistance department, said the procedure for filling the backlog will be completed by June 30, 2011.

    In December 2008, the state government identified 10,608 posts for the disabled according to provisions of the Persons with Disabilities Act, which provides 3% reservation for disabled persons. Currently, only 8,790 posts have been filled.

    Sarang also assured that all state-run and municipal hospitals across Maharashtra shall begin screening newborn babies for disabilities. Additional government pleader also informed that the public health department already issued a circular on April 20, 2011, to all state-run hospitals to undertake screening of newborn babies and forward it the collated data. He said the state government  has also planned to extend screening of new-born babies to private hospitals in future.

    The judges were also informed that the state government will provide 2,282 of its visually-impaired employees with various gadgets to increase their work efficiency. They set a deadline of June 30, 2011, for the state government to make these gadgets available. Blind teachers from aided educational institutions will also be provided the gadgets.
