In August, when Anna Hazare was fasting at the Ramlila ground in New Delhi to protest against the Lokpal Bill, celebrities poured in to support the cause.

Four months later, none of these celeb supporters turned up even when Hazare was fasting in their own city.

Actors Aamir Khan and Om Puri, who had visited Hazare in Delhi, did not show up at the MMRDA ground. Neither did filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar nor singer Kailash Kher.

Shilpa, the public relations person for Khan, said the actor “may be out of town”, but did not get back with the questions sent to him.

Puri said he did visit Hazare because “he does not relate to corruption as the only problem”. “They are not raising any other issues, such as inflation,” Puri told DNA. “While potatoes are sold at a high price, farmers in Punjab are offloading their produce from trucks in protest as they are being sold at 50 paise per kg.”
Puri also found Team Anna to be too rigid. “They need to sit with the government to reach a practical solution. There is no guarantee that (any) Lokpal will not be corrupt.”

While actor Anupam Kher, singer-composer Vishal Dadlani, actor Bharat Dhabolkar came to the MMRDA ground to support Hazare on Tuesday, singer Anup Jalota and Raghu and Rajiv of Roadies fame met him on Wednesday.

“What he is doing is not for him but for us. The bill passed by the government is weak and which is why we are supporting him,” said Jalota.

Though Sri Sri Ravishankar did not come to Mumbai, his representatives supported the fast. Darshak Hathi, international director of Art of Living, said: “We support Anna that’s why I am here.”
