After a division bench of the Gujarat high court noted that the investigation carried out by a three-member special investigation team (SIT) in the Ishrat Jahan case was “not satisfactory”, Ishrat’s family members have said they have strong faith in India’s judicial system and would certainly get justice even if it is delayed. The HC has also asked the SIT to submit a fresh progress report to the registrar general in a sealed cover once again.

“For the past five years, we have been suffering a fate worse than death every day because of the public boycott on our family after the Gujarat police alleged my daughter has links with the Lashkar-e-Toiba,” said Shamima Kausar, Ishrat Jahan’s mother.

“We were confident about Ishrat’s innocence and, as Indians, have faith in the legal and judicial powers in this country.”

On June 15, 2004, Mumbra resident Ishrat, a student of Khalsa College in Mumbai, was gunned down by the Gujarat Police in Ahmedabad with three other youths — Javed Gulam Shaikh aka Pranesh Pillai, Amjadali aka Rajkumar Akbarali Rana and Jisan Johar Abdul Ganny. They were all said to be members of the Lashkar-e-Toiba.

Reacting to the Gujarat high court’s observations, Abdul Rauf Lala, a social worker who has supported Ishrat’s family after her death, said that they had always suspected the investigation to be partial and so had been demanding a neutral inquiry in the matter for the past five years.

“We always believed in the judicial system and so continued to fight for justice,” Lala said. “In fact, it was humanity’s fight for justice.”
