Union opposes move to phase out black-and-yellow taxis

The Mumbai Taximen’s Union has reacted strongly to transport minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil’s plan of phasing out all black-and-yellow taxis in the city and replacing them with high-end vehicles, whose engines are more than 980cc.

Speaking to DNA, Anthony Quadros, president of the Mumbai Taximen’s Union, said, “What about those taximen who have invested in new vehicles like Omni, Alto, Santro, etc. recently? What will happen to them and their vehicles?” he asked.

As per the minister’s plan, the present fleet of black-and-yellow taxis is to be replaced by new, high-end luxury cars.

The idea is that car commuters can thus be drawn towards ‘public transport’ and congestion on roads be reduced.

On Tuesday, Vikhe-Patil told DNA that car manufacturers will be asked to give soft loans to facilitate the taxi drivers’ shift to luxury cars. He added that representatives from the unions will also be involved in talks between the administration and car manufacturers.

However, he was dismissive about the minister’s plans. “The minister has no knowledge of the taxi trade. He seems to be misguided by his juniors.

Car manufacturers are reluctant to give simple discounts. Why will they provide financial help to taxi drivers?” Quadros asked. The veteran union leader was also dismissive about considering any possibility of any financial help from the government.
