Concerned by attacks on doctors at civic hospitals, the BMC has decided to provide walkie-talkies to doctors to communicate with security personnel. It will spend Rs5.5 lakh in the first year.

The state’s resident doctors have often been attacked by relatives of patients. The medicos had been demanding security measures for a long time. Followed by the demand, the Maharashtra assembly approved a bill which made attacking government doctors a non-bailable offence. Those convicted could face a jail term of up to five years and fines up to Rs50,000. Despite these provisions, cases of attacks on doctors did not come to an end.

The civic body has decided to provide walkie-talkies to doctors deputed at emergency wards and casualty wards. In the first phase, the BMC is going to hire 20 sets of walkie-talkies for one year.

The BMC had earlier decided to appoint 500 security personnel in all civic hospitals to provide security. The estimated cost of implementing that decision was Rs8.28 crore. The security guards were to protect not only doctors but also hospital property.

“The plan is to ease communication between doctors and security personnel. This will help doctors assist each other in times of crisis. It will also be useful for the doctors to get advice in handling critical cases in casualty wards,” said Dr Sanjay Oak, medical director and dean of KEM hospital.

Doctors from KEM hospital welcomed the decision. “The BMC was planning to increase the number of security guards. However, instead of increasing the number of guards, the civic body should make the security system more effective. Such advance technology and the equipment may surely make the system effective,” said a doctor.
