A 42-year-old professor working with an engineering college in Chembur committed suicide by jumping off the college building on Friday afternoon. Archana Shah jumped off the seventh floor of the Shah and Anchor Kuttchi Engineering College building at Vashi Naka in Chembur when classes were going on.

College authorities informed the Trombay police, and Shah was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead before admission.

“We found a suicide note. Shah has written that she was suffering from severe pain due to back and spine ailments. It had become out of control and she could not take it anymore, so wanted to end her life,” said senior inspector Sanjay Khire with the Trombay police.

She was a lecturer with the college for 15 years, and, according to staff members, she was very polite and good to everyone and was liked by students.

A workshop on communication skills was scheduled for the afternoon. Shah had informed that she would not be attending the workshop, but turned up nonetheless. The workshop was on in the auditorium located on the ground floor of the building.

She left it midway and went to the seventh floor, where several lecture halls are located and jumped through a window of one of the lecture halls. People passing by alerted the college staff.

The police reached the spot and found the note left behind by Shah.

Dr BK Lande, principal of the college, said, “She was a senior teacher with the electronics department. She was liked by all in the college. She was suffering from severe backache.

However, the management had provided her all the facilities. She was also allowed to come late to college. Some other professors were also taking care of her. They used to make sure that she was all right in college. On Friday, she was not supposed to come to college.”
