Two held for cheating professor

A retired professor of a prominent city college was cheated a wily housemaid, who extracted over Rs one crore from the professor, under the pretext of helping him in getting government land at lower rates.

The 76-year-old victim, Vinayak Jagdev Yadav of Karvenagar, filed the complaint with the anti-extortion cell (AEC) of the Pune city police and the suspect Rekha Godse and Vijay Tandale were arrested by the police.

It all started one and half years’ ago, when Yadav’s son Pravin was pursuing his doctorate under the guidance of one professor Marathe.

At Marathe’s residence, Pravin got acquainted with housemaid Rekha Acharam Godse (45) who won the trust of Pravin and told him that she had good contacts with the Central Bureau of Investigation officers.

Senior police inspector of AEC Sachin Sawant said, “The complainant’s son, Pravin is also a professor at a prominent college in Kothrud and was told by the suspects that through their CBI contacts, they can help him in getting government land at a nominal price.’’

Following which, Pravin informed his father about the offer by Godse and Tandale which was accepted by the complainant.

Sawant said, “Later, the suspects had showed the father-son duo, two plots at Saswad and two bungalows at Lonavla and allegedly took money from them.’’

Till February 6, the suspects extracted Rs1.03 crore from the complainant on various occasions. After arresting Godse and Tandale, the anti-extortion cell recovered Rs5.50 lakh, a car and a mobile phone. However, the magistrate court on Tuesday granted the duo, police custody till February 13.

Arguing for 15-day police custody, assistant public prosecutor Madhav Paul told the court that other accomplices in the crime, Ashok D’Souza, Vishwas Bindra, Anil Joshi and one Bhumkar are on the run and need to be arrested.

During the interrogation, the police got to know that a big gang is likely to involved in such crimes.
