“Chirp for the Sparrow, Tweet for the Sparrow” will be the central theme for bird lovers across the world in coming days.

‘World Sparrow Day’ will be celebrated on 20th March. This small bird has been around for the last 10,000 years but today it is facing extinction.

The changing architectural practices, rapidly diminishing green-cover, changing life-style and the increasing number of mobile towers and the radiation from it is threatening the bird.

“There aspect has not been researched in India. The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has formed the Central Empowerment Team, headed by Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) director Dr. Rehmani. This team is currently studying the various reasons which result in birds getting affected by radiation. Outside India there has been extensive studies in this field, especially in countries like Spain and USA,” said Mohammad Dilawar, researcher from Nashik-based Nature Forever Society, which is involved in the research along with BNHS.

Stressing on the need to conserve sparrows, Dilawar added that, sparrows are the integral part of the eco-system. “It is just like the number of deers in a jungle, who become the food for higher predators. Sparrows are just like them. They survive on insects and bigger birds survive on them. If their number decreases, it will impact the entire natural cycle,” said Dilawar.

In an effort to promote public awareness about the sparrow conservation, BNHS and Nature Forever Society, in collaboration with international organisations such as Eco-Sys Action Foundation (France), Avon Wildlife Trust (UK), Cornell Lab of Ornithology (USA) and numerous other institutions around the world, will undertake the campaign highlighting the significance not only of the sparrow, but all the common birds and biodiversity which are often overlooked.

Promoting the cause, a website called www.worldsparrowday.org where for the first time, the information about 22 out of 26 sparrow species has been put, including rare photographs and also the information of events taking place across the world will be made available.
